Dr Laura McCartney is a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in General Adult and Addiction Psychiatry. She completed her medical degree at Monash University and internship at Barwon Health, before her Psychiatry specialist training at The Alfred Hospital.
Since completing her Fellowship she has taken up unique opportunities, including leading multi-disciplinary psychiatric care in rural, remote and First Nations communities across Far North Queensland and the Torres Strait, and currently holds a public Consultant Psychiatrist appointment at Barwon Health where she leads a team providing intensive psychiatric care in the home. These roles have enabled her to build expertise in providing high quality community-based mental health care in regional and remote areas.
Dr McCartney’s approach is collaborative and person-centred, with a focus on each persons’ unique strengths and vulnerabilities across biological, psychological, cultural and lifestyle domains. This allows her to support each person to make treatment decisions that address each of these aspects, and align with their values and goals.
Through her Advanced Certificate in Addiction Psychiatry, Dr McCartney developed a special interest in Dual Diagnosis (the interplay between alcohol and other drugs, and mental health issues), along with diagnostic complexity, reformulation and medication rationalisation. Her other key area of interest is in women's mental health across the lifespan.
Dr McCartney does not provide assessments or reports for third parties such as courts, NDIS or insurance companies.
Outside of psychiatry, Dr McCartney delights in finding awe and adventure. She might be seen pounding the pavement or out on nature trails, winding down with friends and family, or playing an endless game of fetch with her ball-obsessed dog.
